The lake area

Barney on his island

Barney the rock pit equipment operator sat in a boat in the middle of the gravel pit when it was filling with water, and became a bit known. He patiently sat there with a fishing pole, like all good fishermen, while people with binoculars kept asking if he was real, as is commonlay asked about all fishermen. After the lake filled, he traveled a bit from time to time, and is now back at the lake, with his own island. It is a modest sized island, 17 feet on each side, but rather fancy, with its own solar powered irrigation system for the grass, flowers and trees. The island has a small variety of trees. The ducks and geese enjoy the spot, with one goose nesting on it each spring. The island floats around the lake on a cable tether.

The wedding on the island

It was a superlative wedding on the island. The couple are fun people. The sun was shining as usual. The breeze was calm. The bagpiper played fine music. The people were smiling. The children played on the nearby piles of sand and gravel. Some of the adults did also. The geese swam by. The osprey family watched from their nearby nest on a tower. Everyone enjoyed the event, then went to the Yakima Arboretum adjacent to the south end of the lake, for the reception. Fun time.

The three new Trumpeter swan cygnets, and the usual ducks. A new white wardrobe has been ordered for the swans, and is expected to arrive at their first molt in August 2004.

The resident heron, no doubt dismayed with the new swans. Neck envy, but still beak superior.

The trees around the lake look much better than the old photos below, but again, the web servant is waiting for the pictures. If I throw some cameras in the lake, I will get pictures back from the fish sooner than from the humans who are supposed to take some pictures and send them. We are awash in camera and computer technology, but not human technology.

The hundreds of small seedling trees around the lake shore do not show in these photos. They are a bit wee yet, but growing. The larger trees are native.

Above is the view to the south, with the Yakima Area Arboretum at the south edge of the lake, and beyond that the gap to the lower Yakima Valley.

Above is the view across the lake to the northeast.

Above is a view to the north, along the west side perimeter road.

Above is the ditch between the lake and the Yakima River dike, on the east side of the lake.

Above is the mud pond, north of the northeast corner of the lake, alive with nesting birds and other wildlife. The recreation path is on top of the dike along the Yakima River.
